How to Turn on the Backlit Keyboard on a Dell Laptop

2 Mins read

Overview

Backlit keyboards are a popular feature on laptops, as they allow for easy typing in low-light conditions. If you have a Dell laptop with a backlit keyboard, you may be wondering how to turn it on. In this article, we’ll show you how to turn on the backlit keyboard on a Dell, so you can enjoy your backlit keyboard to the fullest.

How to Turn on the Backlit Keyboard on a Dell Laptop

Step 1:

Open the Dell keyboard control software that comes built-in on Dell laptops. This is usually called “Dell Keyboard Manager” or something similar. You can find it by searching in the search box next to the start menu.

Step 2:

In the Dell Keyboard Manager window that opens, click on the Backlit tab or Backlight tab. This will show the options to control the backlight.

Step 3:

To turn on the backlight, click or select the option that says “Enable” or “Turn on” backlight. This will activate the backlit keys.

Step 4:

There are usually buttons or slider bars to adjust the brightness of the backlight. You can adjust it to different brightness levels like dim, medium or bright. Or select a specific percent brightness from 10-100%.

Step 5:

Some Dell laptops also allow you to select different zones of the keyboard to set different brightness levels. For e.g. to make the WASD section brighter for gaming. Check if your laptop supports any zonal backlight control.

Step 6:

You can set different keyboard modes for the backlight like breathing, strobing etc. The breathing mode slowly fades the backlight keys on and off. Strobing sets a stuttering effect.

Step 7:

Once the backlight is on with your desired settings, you need to initially set a delay or timeout for the backlight to remain on continuously. By default, the backlight turns off after 30 seconds of inactivity. You can increase or decrease this timeout.

Step 8:

When done, simply click “Save”, “Apply” or “OK” to save your backlight preferences. The backlit keys will now remain on with the settings you configured.

Other Methods:

Use the dedicated backlight hotkey: Many Dell laptops have a dedicated hotkey to turn on the backlight keyboard. This is usually FN+Blank or FN+Spacebar. Pressing FN+Blank/Spacebar should turn on the backlight. Repeating the hotkey will cycle through different backlight brightness levels.

Use the shortcut keys: Dell laptops also allow you to use shortcut keys with the Fn key to control the backlight. For example, Fn+F9, Fn+F10, Fn+F11 etc. These shortcut keys will activate and control the level of keyboard backlight. You may have to check your specific Dell model’s documentation to find the correct shortcut keys.

Control through the Desktop: Some Dell laptops provide quick access to system controls through the notification area (system tray) on the desktop. There you may find an icon to access the “Keyboard Manager”, “Dell Keyboard Shortcut Manager” etc. Click on that and select an option to turn on the keyboard backlight.

Use an external keyboard: If all else fails, you can simply use an external USB keyboard to turn on the backlight. Once the backlight turns on through the external keyboard, the special hotkeys and shortcuts on your Dell keyboard should start working to control the backlight levels.

Conclusion

Turning on the backlit keyboard on your Dell laptop is easy once you know how. By following our guide, you can take advantage of this convenient feature and enhance your typing experience in any lighting conditions. So, whether you’re working late into the night or just prefer a well-lit keyboard, turn on the backlit keyboard on your Dell laptop and enjoy the convenience it provides.
