How to Clean a Laptop Keyboard

2 Mins read

Overview

Laptop keyboards are prone to collecting dust, crumbs, and other debris over time, which can affect their performance and make typing a hassle. Fortunately, cleaning your laptop keyboard is a simple and easy process that can help keep it in top shape. In this article, we’ll show you how to clean your laptop keyboard and keep it looking and performing like new.

Shut down your laptop and unplug the power cable. Make sure the laptop is completely powered off and cooled before cleaning the keyboard.

How to Clean a Laptop Keyboard?

Step 1:

Blow out any loose debris from the keyboard using a can of compressed air. Hold the can upright and blow the air in short bursts, wiping away dust through the air vents and gaps between keys. Repeat this until no more debris is coming out.

Step 2:

Use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol or distilled water to clean between the keys. Gently wipe in between each key to remove dirt and spills. Use a drier swab to absorb excess water and alcohol.

Step 3:

Make a DIY keyboard cleaner spray. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. You can add a few drops of lemon juice for fragrance. Spray the solution onto a cloth instead of directly onto the keyboard. This prevents drips.

Step 4:

Wipe each key with the spray-dampened cloth to clean the surface of keys and keys surrounding spaces like WASD, EKM, etc. Use a dry microfiber cloth to buff the entire keyboard.

Step 5:

Remove any key caps following a guide online for your specific laptop model. Soak stubborn stains or stuck-on debris in the vinegar solution before scrubbing with an old toothbrush. Rinse and air dry completely before reassembling keys.

Step 6:

Use a non-abrasive sponge, eraser or brush to clean gently stuck-on food or grime from between keys. Avoid getting liquid into the laptop interior.

Step 7:

Dry the entire keyboard with a microfiber cloth to remove any remaining moisture. Let the keyboard air dry completely if needed.

Tips:

  • Clean laptop keyboards regularly to prevent built-up grime.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Dry hands before using a laptop to prevent water spots.
  • Use compressed air for stubborn dust buildup.
  • Color-coded key guides can help reassembly.
  • Be gentle while cleaning between keys.

Notes: Thoroughly testing your keyboard and ensuring there are no stuck or jammed keys before normal usage is recommended after reassembling a partially disassembled laptop.

Conclusion

A clean keyboard is essential for comfortable and efficient typing on your laptop. By following our guide, you can easily clean your laptop keyboard and get rid of any debris that may be affecting its performance. So, don’t let crumbs and dust cramp your typing style – clean your laptop keyboard today and enjoy a better typing experience!
